The CSCS Labourer Card, also known as the CSCS green card is the perfect first step for your career in construction.
It’s nice and simple to get started so let’s break it down.
Steps:
We can break down this process into three simple steps:
- Complete the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in Construction
- Complete the CITB health, safety and environment test for operatives
- Complete the CSCS online application
Step 1: Relevant Qualification
The first step is to complete a qualification accepted by the CSCS. We recommend that you take the Highfield Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. This is a lifetime qualification so it has an edge on top of the other qualifications.
There are lots of different qualifications accepted by the CSCS, you can view the full list here.
Taking the Highfield Level 1 Construction qualification is simple but it can sometimes be the longest part of the process due to the notice that needs to be given to the examiners. You will need to let your learning provider know, 3 working days in advance of your desired exam date and they will register you with Highfield. Make sure you complete the exam set up in advance. The exam is 90 minutes long and is multiple choice.
After completing the exam, you should receive your certificate within 2 working days from your learning provider.
Since you will be waiting for the certificate and waiting for your exam date, it is recommended that you complete step 2 in the meantime if you are looking to complete this full process as quick as possible.
Step 2: CITB HS&E Test
This is a multiple-choice exam. It is taken at an approved test centre. You will need to book the test either online at the CITB website or by phone.
Once you have completed the test, the CSCS will receive the results of your test directly. You need to have completed this test within the past 2 years to be eligible for the CSCS Labourer’s card.
Step 3: Complete the CSCS Online application
Visit the CSCS website and complete the application.
You will need:
A scanned copy of your relevant qualification.
Your test ID number from your CITB HS&E test. This is found at the top of your pass certificate.
A credit or debit card to pay the application fee (£36)
Conclusion
To get started with the process we recommend you start with the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in Construction. Then you should book your CITB HS&E test. (You can do these 2 steps in any order and we recommend you do them as soon as possible if you are trying to get the process done as quick as possible).
